چکیده

Spitzer Space Observatory IRAC and MIPS photometric observations are presented for 20 white dwarfs with Teff . 20, 000 K and metal-contaminated photospheres. A warm circumstellar disk is detected at GD 16 and likely at PG 1457−086, while the remaining targets fail to reveal mid-infrared excess typical of dust disks, including a number of heavily polluted stars. Extending previous studies, over 50% of all single white dwarfs with implied metal accretion rates dM/dt & 3 × 10 g s display a warm infrared excess from orbiting dust; the likely result of a tidally-destroyed minor planet. This benchmark accretion rate lies between the dust production rates of 10 g s in the solar system zodiacal cloud and 10 g s often inferred for debris disks at main sequence A-type stars. It is estimated that between 1% and 3% of all single white dwarfs with cooling ages less than around 0.5 Gyr possess circumstellar dust, signifying an underlying population of minor planets. Subject headings: circumstellar matter— infrared: stars– minor planets, asteroids— planetary systems – stars: abundances— stars: evolution— stars: individual (GD 16, PG 1457−086)— stars: low-mass, brown dwarfs — white dwarfs

Pollution of Single White Dwarfs by Accretion of Many Small Asteroids

Extrapolating from the solar system’s asteroid belt, we propose that externally-contaminated white dwarfs without an infrared excess may be experiencing continuous accretion of gas-phase material that ultimately is derived from the tidal destruction of multiple small asteroids. If this scenario is correct, then observations of metal-polluted white dwarfs may lead to determining the bulk element...

Disks and Planets around Massive White Dwarfs

We predict the existence of dusty disks and possibly CO planets around massive white dwarfs. We show that the thermal emission from these disks should be detectable in the infrared. The planets may also be detectable either by direct IR imaging, spectroscopy, or using the pulsations of the white dwarfs. Subject headings: white dwarfs—stars: planetary systems—accretion disks

Spitzer Irac Observations of White Dwarfs. I. Warm Dust at Metal-rich Degenerates

This paper presents the results of a Spitzer IRAC 3−8 μm photometric search for warm dust orbiting 17 nearby, metal-rich white dwarfs, 15 of which apparently have hydrogen dominated atmospheres (type DAZ). G166-58, G29-38, and GD 362 manifest excess emission in their IRAC fluxes and the latter two are known to harbor dust grains warm enough to radiate detectable emission at near-infrared wavele...

Spitzer Irac Observations of White Dwarfs. Ii. Massive Planetary and Cold Brown Dwarf Companions to Young and Old Degenerates

This paper presents a sensitive and comprehensive IRAC 3 − 8 μm photometric survey of white dwarfs for companions in the planetary mass regime with temperatures cooler than the known T dwarfs. The search focuses on descendents of intermediate mass stars with M & 3 M⊙ whose inner, few hundred AU regions cannot be probed effectively for massive planets and brown dwarfs by any alternative existing...

A NICMOS Direct Imaging Search for Giant Planets around the Single White Dwarfs in the Hyades

We report preliminary results from our search for massive giant planets (6-12 Jupiter masses) around the known seven single white dwarfs in the Hyades cluster at sub-arcsec separations. At an age of 625 Myr, the white dwarfs had progenitor masses of about 3 solar masses, and massive gaseous giant planets should have formed in the massive circumstellar disks around these ex-Herbig A0 stars, prob...
